What do kids like more that a gift?

Lil reviews one of our newest Gift Boxes.

Everyone knows that kids (babies and toddlers in particular) are often more fascinated with the box and wrapping paper than the actual present. So I was excited to hear that my two year old daughter (that’s her in the photos) had been chosen to try out RedBalloon’s very cool new Gift Box experience – Kid’s DIY Build Your Own Aeroplane. It’s a ride on toy of sorts, made of cardboard, you can draw on it, you put it together yourself and your child can then pretend to fly in it – sound fun?

The plane arrived flat packed and as we opened the packaging and my daughter saw the image of the toy plane with child inside her eyes lit up and she started squealing with delight. Half the fun was assembling the plane, she sat next to me as we put the box together handing me the pieces – the tail, the wings and the propeller all needed to be fixed into place. We then added our own purple straps just to make it a little more secure on her shoulders. The concentration on her face was priceless as we fixed all the pieces into place. She felt so proud to be included in such a big construction project!

Once the plane was assembled she stepped right in and started whizzing around making what she thinks are plane noises. I then brought out all the Crayolas – crayons, pencils, textas, washable markers – you name it, we’ve got it, and I told her she could decorate her new plane. Well, if she was excited before that point then she was over the moon as she picked up the markers and started drawing on the cardboard plane. Her scribbly artworks covered the plane and she couldn’t have been more happy with herself.

We had such fun with this experience in a box, and it kept my active toddler busy for hours. Best of all it was something that we created together. Who would have thought that a cardboard box could be so much fun?
