Jay talks to Australian off-road champion Chris Western about his first car, career highlights and why people should get in an off-road buggy.
Jay: What was your first car?
Chris: Black Baja which I bought for $100 bucks and a carton of beer.
Jay: How did you get into racing?
Chris: Rhyce (Dad) was the Event Director of the Waikerie Enduro in the 1980′s when it was an Australian Off-Road Championship event and South Australian State round. The family have always been extensively involved in the off-road racing scene.
Jay: Why did you choose off-road racing and not another form of motorsport?
Chris: This is the most extreme motorsport there is and off-road racing is such a family sport.
Jay: What are your career highlights to date?
Chris: Australian Championship winners in 2009/2010. Runner up in 2011.
Jay: What are your future racing plans?
Chris: Finish of this year’s Championship, we are currently 200 points behind in second place so hopefully I can have a win at our next event in 4 weeks to reclaim the Championship Title. Run the Baja 1000 in conjunction with Mickey Thompson Tires in Australia and the US.
Jay: Why should people come out and get in an off-road buggy, either to drive or just ride?
Chris: Because it is different to any other car out there, and these do jumps, plus they are real Race Cars that we compete with in Australia, and it’s just a heap of fun!!
