Read-on to find out Doug’s modern rituals
It’s often bandied about these days that as a modern society, we are losing our sense of ritual. Perhaps there’s something to it, and to rituals benefit to us.
I guess there’s nothing for it but to test and see – So, over the last two years, I’ve started to establish my own.
Let me introduce you to Crescent Heads. Crescent Heads is a (truly) picturesque seaside village about 5 hours North of Sydney. Amongst all of the standard beach town activities, lying a little out of the town is one of the coolest RedBalloon experiences around -Â our two day surf camp
Over the last two Easter long weekends, I’ve made a journey to Crescent Heads to spend a weekend surfing, talking, reading and dancing (and Occasionally even a bit of shut eye in one of the hammocks!). It’s something that began as a hunt for a new experience, has become a habit and will hopefully become a yearly pilgrimage for me.
The surf camp is all inclusive and covers transport to and from Crescent Heads in a groovy surf bus, great food, surf lessons, surf equipment (board + wet suit) and of course accommodation. When you are wanting somewhere to really escape and unwind for the whole weekend, it helps that everything is prepared for you.
I dare say that experience has something for everyone that enjoys beach culture. With surf lessons on Saturday/Sunday morning and Saturday afternoon, a beach side fire and drinks on the Saturday night and great food/company the entire way through, it ticks all the boxes for me in terms of a weekend away. Relaxation, contemplation and conversation. Did I mention exercise? There’s lots of that too. Surfing is hard work!
All sounds amazing so far, right? Come and join me next year! Or perhaps create a ritual to just take a little time out for yourself. It’s worth it.
