I Heart Sydney

Our Employee Experience Assistant Cat is celebrating her one year anniversary next month – not with her boyfriend, but with Sydney.

Giving up a job on a super yacht that travels around the world to exotic places was not easy, but almost one year ago that’s exactly what I did.  After celebrating my 30th birthday in beautiful French Polynesia, I decided to move to Sydney, settle down and get a “real” job.

Most people warned me off Sydney, saying “it’s too expensive”, “it’s too hard to get a job”, or “you’ll never find a good flat”.  Luckily I didn’t listen, and within my first week of arriving I had an amazing flat and a job offer – now I can’t imagine ever leaving this beautiful city.

To top things off, I was offered my dream job at RedBalloon this year.  The job description went something like this:
“Must be able to cook BBQ’s, build IKEA furniture, organise company events and have fun at work…….” I thought it sounded too good to be true! Some said I was joining a cult – that it wasn’t normal to be encouraged to have fun at work.  I can gladly say that it’s not a cult, and we really do have a ridiculous amount of fun at work every day!

The only thing the job description didn’t mention was the amount of balloons that I’d have to blow up – but I guess that’s the reality of working for a company that has ‘balloon’ in its name!

One of the best things about working at RedBalloon is being given the opportunity to see even more of the city I’ve fallen in love with.
In my first two months I’ve been lucky enough to go on the “Jet Blast” jet boat in Sydney Harbour and wakeboarding at Wiseman’s Ferry.  Being a lover of boats and water sports, these experiences are right up my alley.

I was a little bit apprehensive about the water being freezing while wakeboarding in May, but surprisingly it wasn’t so bad!  Our instructor, Bill, was the best teacher – I went from amateur to intermediate straight away due to his awesome driving. On the other hand, I have to admit that jet boating was a little bit scary – I may have closed my eyes while zooming past rock faces – but it was still a completely exhilarating experience.

I’ve also had the opportunity to volunteer at the Sydney Dog’s and Cat’s Home, as part of our “We Care” charity program.  I spent the day cuddling puppies and cats, walking dogs, and helping out with general chores.  Check out these cute little guys……

So what’s next on the list of fun events at RedBalloon?  Aside from our monthly lunches, fortnightly breakfasts and weekly drinks, I’m planning a possible company trip – the details are top secret, but at this stage it looks like we’ll be enjoying three days of fun in Port Douglas if we hit our yearly target. How lucky are we?!

Now that I work at RedBalloon, I think it’s safe to say that my love affair with Sydney will continue.
