The power of giving

Our Offline Coordinator Mel took her dad on an experience they’ll remember forever.

“You work for RedBalloon? Isn’t that the company that offers hot air ballooning?”

If I had a personal FAQ, this question would be at the top of the list.

My standard response is, “We sure do, but we also have over 2,500 experiences on offer and 52 gift boxes.”

I have been very fortunate in my three years at RedBalloon to have been given many opportunities to partake in an array of wonderful experiences, but so far my most memorable would have to be skydiving.

For me, skydiving has always been number one on my bucket list. So when RedBalloon told me I was going to be jumping from a plane, I couldn’t wait to share the exciting news with my family and friends. I vividly remember feeling both happy and terrified at the same time.

But who would come with me? My dad and I have always been the daredevils of the family. When I was younger we went on the pirate ship at Wonderland  he wouldn’t let me hold onto the handle bars – it was the one and only condition of getting on the ride.

“You get on, you don’t hold on! Don’t be a scaredy-cat,” he would say.

So naturally I couldn’t think of any one better to share this experience with. After telling my dad he was coming with me, he was a little hesitant. Dad couldn’t fathom jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane all in the name of FUN. But after telling him not to be a “scaredy-cat” he was all ears and ready for the adventure.

The Skydive took place in beautiful North Wollongong – I couldn’t believe that we were actually going to be jumping out over the breathtaking beach! If you have been lucky enough to visit Wollongong, you’ll know how picturesque it is with its amazing beaches and national parks.

From start to finish, the skydive really did live up to all of my expectations. During the dive you actually free fall for 15 seconds. Being the adrenaline junky that I am, I thought this was the best part. The rest of the dive was spent gliding down over the beach, where I was given the opportunity to see the wonderful natural allure of Wollongong.

After safely landing I was so thrilled that I actually hugged my instructor and wanted to go right back up and do it all over again.

My dad absolutely loved skydiving too. It was an amazing experience that always stands out in my mind, plus it also felt great to give someone else a day they will never forget.

This experience truly sums up why I love RedBalloon; you can give someone something that is so much more meaningful than a material gift – you are able to give them an experience they’ll remember forever.
