A birthday high tea for mum and me

My mum’s a pretty incredible woman. Between raising four kids under five, completing a statistics PHD and answering my endless “Where did I leave my keys/wallet/handbag?” questions by using what I can only assume is X-ray vision – the woman is practically superwoman. So when I saw that my mum’s birthday was rapidly approaching, I was pretty stumped by what to get her.

In the past I’ve given mum some pretty memorable gifts…

Mani/pedi vouchers and homemade bath bombs; macaroni necklaces and a fridge magnet marsupial holding a table tennis racquet (it’s still on our family fridge today, so I’m pretty sure she loves it!)

This year I wanted to do something different. Five months ago when I got my dream job at RedBalloon, I realised that the best gift you can give someone is an experience. So I wanted to celebrate with mum by giving her something she’d never forget. And what better way to celebrate than with an Indulgent Sparkling High Tea for 2? And like Pete, I thought to get an experience for 2 so that I could go along as well. Sneaky, sneaky…

On a rainy and cold Saturday we set off for an afternoon of sheer indulgence. We were greeted by the friendly staff and led to two plush chairs in our own private corner of the venue. It was cold outside but toasty warm inside thanks to a portable heater that was set up close by. We had only just started catching up over a glass of bubbly when our high tea tower was placed down on the table.

Now let’s cut to the chase – I’m a big fan of dessert. In fact sometimes I skip dinner just to get to it, so this selection of treats obviously made all of my dreams come true. But I was also pleasantly surprised to see a nice selection of sandwiches, prawns and chicken skewers – which were all a bit outside the ‘high tea’ square. We were spoilt for choice and indulged in:

Something Sweet:
Including scones with Chantilly cream and raspberry conserve, a selection of individual French pastries, chocolate sacher, macaroons and chocolate coated strawberries.

Something Savoury:
Including a selection of finger sandwiches, prawn gow gee with ginger soy, chilli garlic prawns and barbeque chicken tikka.

Something to Drink:
A wide variety of loose leaf tea, coffee in any style and a glass of NV Villeroy Brut Blanc de Blanc.

It was a real treat spending the gloomy day indoors with my mum. The entire experience was exceptional – it was truly a feast for the senses and we can’t wait to go back again.

My experience of the Red Balloon in a Tiger Moth was fantastic. To be sitting in a Tiger Moth was truly amazing and the nostalgia felt whilst flying was something I will never forget. My pilot Lionel was a true gentleman of the skies and had an easy manner with a professional attitude. I would recommend this experience to all.
